Green Houses

Houses which utilise renewable energy source(s) for the supply of all of its electricity needs are accordingly termed green houses or buildings. These houses run from solar,wind,hydro or other energy sources to meet their energy requirements. However,to meet all energy requirements of any house from renewable sources could be a very costly venture. Cost could start from N5million Naira,but most times maintenance and running costs are practically zero for several years.

 

Hybrid-Green Houses

A standard  average 3-bedroom flat would require a minimum of N5million Naira to become effectively a solar powered house,typically a green house,where public power supply is virtually not needed. For this reason of high cost,most houses are not completely green, some appliances are run by the solar supply and the others by public power supply most of the time. Therefore they are called hybrid-green houses.These houses generally use low energy appliances including low energy  lighting devices like LEDs,CFCs, and the more popular energy saving bulbs.Use of DC LEDs have the outstanding advantage of simplicity and no inverter requirement for lighting only. With just a 12V/100AMPH or 200AMPH battery, and one 50W-solar panel, you can be sure your premises is lighted all year round at no running cost and a good solar panel can last for up to 25 years,the battery can last for up to 7 years and a good LED bulb can last more than 5 years. Modern houses are designed to be energy-efficient. However,energy-efficiency can always be incoporated even in an already finished house.Due to the high cost of solar panels for providing all the energy requirement for most houses,the idea of providing only lighting via solar energy while other appliances are supplied via public supply or generator is a novel idea and these houses are  therefore called hybrid-green houses accordingly.DC TVs,fans or other DC appliances can also be plugged directly to the provided DC sockets, though this may require expanding the battery bank and the charging  solar array,hence more cost. Some clients however prefer to have a mains-charging inverter system that could  supply most of their appliances instead of the investment on lighting alone,and then use a standby generator in event of prolonged public power outage.This has the advantage of being able to use your other AC appliances on the inverter circuit since DC appliances are not common in African market. Others who can afford it,go for a solar-charging inverter system. A combination of running DC lighting and a mains-solar-charged inverter running from the same battery bank seems to be the best solution in terms of reliability and useability.

There are manual and automatic changeovers available today in the industry,and of several brands.Automatic changeovers are becoming increasingly popular.They automatically switch from one power source to another during a power outage or according to the sequence of time that has been programmed on it by the operator. Automatic changeovers have the major advantage of convenience.

Low Energy Lighting and Appliances

Due to rising cost of public power supply and mostly for its scarcity,it has become  pertinent that we all reduce the energy consumption of our homes by using energy saving appliances. And this is one major way to improve the power situation of any country. Energy conservation is a way of life for people in the western world. Countries like Cuba adopted drastic energy conservation as a key policy and were able to provide adequate power supplies for its citizens in a short while. Equipment and appliances that have low power consuming substitutes which work as well or better, should be banned or tax-jerked to discourage  purchase. A particular and common example is the filament or incandescent lighting bulb we see everywhere which you will hardly see in some neighbouring African countries. I stood outside my compound one night and turning 360 degrees, I could count about 40 of 60/100watt of these inefficient bulbs. Let me assume all these bulbs are 60 watts bulbs, so the wattage consumed would be 2400W, just within an area of  about 100 square meters. Assuming conservatively that the same number of bulbs are used within these buildings, then a total of about 4800W is consumed within this area. My city is about 30km square, thus a total of about 1,440MW is the estimated consumption on lighting in this city and therefore about  54,000MW would be required in 37 capitals cities in Nigeria for lighting only! This is a clear indication that without energy conservation,no amount of energy generated by any nation will ever be adequate.

Energy efficient bulbs and LEDs are far better than filament or incandescent bulbs. A 10Watt energy bulb is approximately equivalent to a 60Watt filament bulb in terms of luminance or even better. Thus on this basis only about 9000MW is required to light up Nigerian cities, thus about 45,000MW is wasted! And if these inefficient filament bulbs are turned on for 10 hours in a day and we consider that the average rate charged per kilowatt hour by PHCN is roughly N7 per KWhr,then for the 37 states,more than N1.15Trillion Naira is wasted annually. Note that this estimation considered only one city in each state, other cities, rural areas, densely populated areas  and power wastage constituted by other inefficient appliances were not considered.

Good energy bulbs prices start from about N500 and above and last for more than 3 years (usually 50,000hours, we have used them for more than 3 years now, there are fakes too) hence replacing all these inefficient bulbs with the efficient ones would cost about N75 Billion and we would have a savings of more than N3 Trillion ($20Billion) in three years and have power available for other domestic and industrial uses! The government needs to raise the import duty or tax on these inefficient bulbs and many energy-inefficient appliances,or ban them out rightly or better still employ Cuba electric billing method which would naturally force people to dispose of all inefficient appliances. We need more power stations quite right but we can do better by efficiently managing what is currently available or that will be made available.Use energy-saving bulbs always!Use energy-saving fridges.Use energy-saving appliances.It is the green way!
